County 'plugged into' flood mitigation talks now

Vulcan County officials are now “plugged into” the flood mitigation process now after a meeting they had April 17 with the Alberta government’s flood recovery task force.

“We had a very good meeting with the department in Calgary,” said Leo Ludwig, the County’s administrator.

Ludwig, Reeve Derrick Annable and Perry Stein, who has been working on flood mitigation for the County, met with Andre Corbould, chief assistant deputy minister for the flood recovery task force and other government officials.

There was perhaps a “misperception” or “miscommunication” about the flood impacts in the County last year, said Ludwig.

At a flood mitigation meeting at the Vulcan Legion on April 2 Ludwig pointed out that consultants had not contacted County officials about reports they were preparing for the Alberta government regarding flood mitigation.

Cathy Maniego, executive director of mitigation for the Alberta government’s flood recovery Task Force, replied that she would “take that back.”

But no one was been in touch since, said Ludwig.

“I think we cleared that up in our meeting,” he said.

Because both the Bow and Little Bow river valleys run through Vulcan County, County officials want to be in on the discussions on the flood mitigation options being proposed, said Ludwig.

“What do we need to do in our community?” said Ludwig. “How will those works impact Vulcan County?”

The County will now be attending “quite a few meetings” regarding proposed flood mitigation measures on both river valleys, said Ludwig, who planned to attend the Tuesday, April 29 flood mitigation symposium hosted by the Alberta government at Calgary’s BMO Centre.

“We’ve applied for some grant funding just because of the volume of work involved,” said Ludwig, with Stein working on flood mitigation on behalf of the County.
