Alberta is lending a helping hand after floods have devastated Pakistan.

According to a press release, the Government of Alberta has joined efforts with the Canadian Red Cross to help those impacted by the floods.

The government will match dollar for dollar every donation Albertans and Alberta organizations make to the Canadian Red Cross, up to a maximum $500,000.

The funds will help the Canadian Red Cross provide support to millions of people in Pakistan where floods, flash floods and landslides have affected more than 30 million people, killed more than 1,200 people and left thousands injured and homeless.

“Albertans are stepping up to support millions of people in Pakistan going through this humanitarian crisis,” said Premier Jason Kenney.

“We hope this grant will encourage Albertans to give what they can to help those impacted by this disaster. Alberta’s contribution will support the Red Cross’s efforts to provide essential relief items such as food, shelter, water and medicines.”

In August, the Government of Canada pledged $5 million in funding for humanitarian assistance in Pakistan. That was on top of the $3 million Canada donated from the UN Central Emergency Response Fund.

Alberta’s Associate Minister of Immigration and Multiculturalism Muhammad Yaseen said he’s happy to see the province step up and support Pakistan.

“Albertans are generous and regularly come forward to help those affected by natural disasters at home and around the world,” he said.

“The non-stop monsoon rains have created a catastrophe in Pakistan, and I am grateful that the donations of Albertans through the Canadian Red Cross will support thousands of people as they begin their recovery.”
